A note from the President:
We have prepared an update on the Tool Box. What follows
is a summary of what the Tool Box can and cannot do.
The demand for the Tool Box expansion card cage is proof that it
is a great product for the person not ready for an A2000. In the
beginning our tests showed some cards worked more consistently on
the A1000 than actually occured in the field. If this new
information is taken into consideration the Tool Box is a very
consistent performer.
This update is set up so that if you have a specific question you
can go directly to the area of your concern. If there are any
questions please give us a call.

Tool Box UPDATE:
INTRODUCTION
The Tool Box provides a COST EFFECTIVE method of expansion for
the non A2000 owner and at the same time provides the dealer with
another market for A2000 type expansion cards. The introduction
of the ToolBox has been an amazing success. We have been more
than pleased with the response from our customers and dealers.
However, the introduction has not been without its problems.
Some of these problems are within our control and we have taken
steps to correct them. However, some we cannot control and those
are also addressed.
PRODUCT AVAILABILITY
As indicated we are very pleased with the acceptance of the Tool
Box line of expansion card cages. You might say it was too much
of a success. Our original thought was that the A500 version
was going to be the most popular due to the A1000 market being
serviced with memory cards and hard drives for several years.
Thus we introduced the A500 model first. Well needless to say we
were wrong. The A1000 owner still has a hungry appetite for
expansion and our manufacturing projections were off
significantly and it caused a shortage of product. As of this
date the printed circuit boards have started to arrive in large
quantities and since this was the problem we should be able to
ship your order within a few days of receipt. Thank you for your
patience.
COMPATIBILITY
Before releasing the Tool Box we performed a very specific series
of tests utilizing the most popular boards in all combinations on
several machines. Bullet proof right? Wrong! We experienced a
wide variance in the Amigas ability to perform properly with
A2000 cards on the bus. The Tool Box brings with it an infinite
variety of boards and machines-thus it is best to go with what
"works most effectively" based on field input. In summary the
A500 generally is without problems. The A1000 however, is in a
world of its own and there are some A2000 cards that work better
than others.
A500:
In general the A500 has been free of problems. All hard drive
interfaces and memory cards work. With the exception of
Microbotics products (see Microbotics below) and trying to
install two Commodore 2052 cards in the same Tool Box (too much
power used) the A500 version provides a cost effective method of
expansion.
====================================================
The A500 appears to work effectively with all
combinations of memory boards and hard cards.
====================================================
A1000:
The A1000 expansion bus has for hardware companies been a source
of curiosity, frustration, challenge and when all is
dark...humor. In the words of a famous author "The A1000,s are
different than you and me." Well, at least different than the
A2000 bus. Let's start with what we have always known should be
addressed and that is the well known PAL problem. They must be
changed and grounded for any cards to work effectively. The
subject is completely covered in our manual, including diagrams.
=======================================================
The PALs must be grounded in the A1000 before adding any
expansion products to the bus.
=======================================================
=======================================================
Some of the cards that were designed for the A2000 bus
will not work 100% of the time on the A1000.
=======================================================
If it isn't 99% then we feel we cannot recommend the product and
its market remains the A2000. In fairness to manufacturers and
designers of boards that we are not recommending, they did not
consider the A1000 as a home for their product as the Tool Box
did not exist.
The primary problem is one of noise and as a result timing. Some
boards are noisier than others and/or are more sensitive. We
have developed a "Termination Board" that is placed on the bus
in most cases reduces the noise and eliminates the problem. Be
aware that it eliminates the bus and is an extra purchase (see
Termination below). We have also developed an opinion on what
will and will not work in the A1000 Tool Box.
The following boards appear to work with 99% reliability in
the A1000 Tool Box:
Memory Boards Hard Drive Interfaces
1. Commodore A2058 1. FlashCard!
2. Microbotics 8UP (B version) 2. Trump Card
3. ProRam 2000 3. Commodore 2090A
=========================================================
Most A1000 customers want to add memory and a hard drive.
THE MOST RELIABLE COMBINATION WE HAVE FOUND IS THE
COMMODORE 2058 (8MB) AND THE FLASHCARD!.
=========================================================
There has not been a failure with the above combination.
Other than the 2058 there is a "chance" that a termination board
will be required on other A2000 memory boards used on the A1000.
This specifically applies to the Micron, ASDG and Commodore 2052.
That doesn't mean that other combinations will not work
effectively and when they are determined we will update this list.
TERMINATION BOARD
Terminating the bus "cleans" up the signals generated by the
A1000 bus and the longer lead length required to conform to the
A2000 orientation. (The bus must be flipped 180 degrees then
flipped back for the buss return.) This termination card plugs
right on the bus and extends the width of the box by 2 inches.
It is not pretty and not required in all cases and hence not
included. Its manufacturing cost is what will be charged to the
dealer or customer. We intend for the dealer to pass it along at
the same price.
VENDER NOTES
Microbotics
The People at Microbotics recommend that the Hard Frame hard
drive interface should NOT be used on either the A500 or the
A1000. It will not work reliably. However, the B version of
their 8 UP memory board (DIP) appears to work just fine.
Great Valley Products
Using their products on the A500 is fine. We have no reports of
failure. But after extensive testing and talking with customers
in the field, we do not recommend using the GVP interface on the
A1000. This interface is working well for many customers.
However, we have had a few failures and as we stated we cannot
go with any product that isn't at least 99% reliable.
IN REVIEW
The Tool Box is an affordable opportunity for the A500 and A1000
owner to place A2000 boards on their machine. The A1000 owner
has to use the recommended cards but in doing so can also enjoy
very reliable computing.
MOST ASKED QUESTIONS
Q. Why didn't you fully buffer the bus?
A. Cost. The expense of recreating a full "zorro 2" backplane
with full arbitration and buffering exceeded the target cost of
an affordable two slot box. There have been attempts at a full
A2000 expansion card cage ( T2000, Ameristar, Bills Boards) but
these have either never seen the marketplace or when they arrived
were in the $500 to $600 range with more money required to make
it fully functional. Two TTL loads on an unbuffered bus has
worked very effectively with an updated (PAL change and ground)
A1000 using the expansion products produced to date. (Starboard,
Escort 2, Easel, hard drives etc.) The added variable of boards
designed specifically for the A2000 limits the number that work
100% of the time. Staying within the recommended products
assures that you will have trouble free expanded A1000.
Q. Does the Tool Box have room for a hard card and another card?
A. Yes. It was specifically designed to provide memory and hard
drive expansion.
Q. Will the Tool Box provide enough power for the hard drive?
A. Yes. It will power the interface, a 3.5in. drive and a memory
board.
Q. What is the rating of the power supply?
A. 6 amps at 5 Volts and 3 amps at 12 Volts. Some of the early
units had a defective 12 volt line. We did a recall and
replacement so those should no longer be a problem. Also some of
the literature and advertising refers to a 5 amp power supply.
This is being changed as soon as is practical.
Q. Can the customer get a Tool Box without a power supply?
A. No. Although a few were made and are still available from
Expansion Technologies we have stopped production. Due to market
demand we now only make the power supply model.
Q. Will the Tool Box accept the Commodore Bridge card?
A. Yes and No. The Tool Box supports the IBM software but not the
IBM hardware. This means that you cannot use IBM expansion
cards. However, it is our experience that the average Bridge
card customer was originally looking only for software
compatibility.
Q. How does the hard drive on a Trump Card get its power?
A. The Trump Card does not take the hard drive power from the 100
pin connector. We have made a change that consists of installing
an additional connector inside the box that plugs directly into
the rear of the hard drive. If your box does not have this extra
connector contact us as we have them for you to install or the
Tool Box can be returned.
